locales due to the different energy consumption patterns found in these
locations. (Can, Letschert, McNeil, Zhou, & Sathaye, 2009). Although space
cooling currently is a less important energy use than heating, it is growing rapidly
both in high-income countries and in emerging economies such as India and
China (Isaac & Vuuren, 2009). Energy consumption in the residential sector is
closely linked to the urbanization rate. Urban households tend to have higher
levels of energy needs and therefore, the migration of rural population towards
urban centres increases the level of energy use. In addition, other factors, such
as the increase in housing space represents a major driver of energy demand
(Can, Letschert, McNeil, Zhou, & Sathaye, 2009). The effect of urbanization in
developing countries can be seen in graph 2-6 where the Indian experience
shows how the use of wood for cooking and heating falls dramatically while
electricity and LPG increases in importance.
